Ssoooooooo.....who has taken advantage of the extended trading hours and if so what have you purchased?
Was wondering today if any of the retailers that did not open during the week have missed out on customers tonight being the traditional late night shop. Not from me, I'm a tight arse
squeaks when in fart even![]()
Sooooooo.......who has taken advantage of the extended retail hours and if so what have they purchased?
Well...Christmas has thankfully been and gone. Has anyone take advantage of the extended trading hours to buy food or maybe a washing machine etc post xmas?
I've found that most shops don't open anyway. Only the supermarkets like coles and woolies are open.
Croweman is speaking wisdom to the many Cro-Magnon consumers out there.![]()
You never miss your water (or quality time with fam/friends) till it's gone.![]()
loving the fact i have a coles and IGA open to 9pm everynight . Means i can shop on the way home from work and not affect my kiting/personal time on a saturday . I still go to the farmers market on the weekend to get my vegies and **** .
Increased trading hours is something the government has done right .
Now for them to have some balls and give us back our daylight savings .
I remember when we use to have until 5.30pm weekdays and till 12 noon on a Saturday to do our shopping and we all survived without a hitch! We now have the highest credit card debt per capita in the world! The Aussie dream of having the family home on a block of land with front and back yard is no longer possible for many folk and thats becoming more so each year! Everyone only has "x" amount of earnings each week and only so much to spend. Yet the big chain stores want more of that!!! Longer trading hours - who benefits??? Not us, the multi national chain stores do! The smaller stores cant compete and/or cant afford the extra staff and/or to pay the overtime. I am a retailer and farmer. Neither I can afford to give up right now. A bunch of friends struggling in retail against the giants of Coles, Woolies and Harvey Norman etc Some who operate in the already Sunday trading zones have had to shut because overtime Sunday adds to their overheads. Get out of the shops and out with your family and/or on the water - extended trading hours - to hell with it.... ohh and good to see you folk as I am new here ;) hahaha
cheers from the West.
Cam...
Bang on Cam, those were the days when we thought for ourselves and were not controlled by the almighty dollar and large retail chains, they were also "happy days" when "quality time" was not spent at the shops, then mum and dad working the other 6 days to pay for it all. I know i'm reminiscing however I have encouraged my kids to stay away from a retail career and enjoy life.
Stop living in the past man!
Perths population has grown so that it can suport longer trading hours.
Whenever I go to a large retail store - or worse a mall - the consumer frenzy and palpable 'geddthe****outtamyway!' greedy vibe oozing from the (mostly) fat fks there FULLY creeps me out.![]()
I'd much rather be on the water or down the park/beach with the fam any day - speshly weekends.
And don't get me started on the lack of competition down the track, too late, iv'e started!, just look at the ripoff with fuel now that there are very few independents around. the same thing will happen when the "big retail boys" are all we have to "choose" from. Price fixing will ensure we pay a higher premium for our goods and the Gov't will be a toothless tiger, just look at the banks!
Glad I've got all that off my chest.
It's been several months since the trading hours were changed in WA does anyone within their family and friends know ANYONE being employed because of the change of shopping hours?
If the government spin was true there should be many [but I doubt it]
Yep the population has grown in little old Perth. So has the credit card debt and cost of living. People are still chasing the money tree, but most of us cant find it. So we all still only have so many dollars to spend before the cards get a work out! AND that is what is happening! One of my best mates left Coles admin recently. What he can tell you about shop layout, design and impulse buying is scary! They are chomping at the bit for extended trading, just like Mr Harvey Norman himself and his payment free 12+ months, bookem up payment plans. "No surprise that they want extended trading hours big time, will enable them to hurt/crush the competition [the little guys] - increase their shareholder profits and admin and board salaries. As people will shop with the extra hours and book it up to their cards when money I short but the product looks good. As is so common". His words as best I remember, not mine, but I know them well. Yep the good ol days. Some of them were damn good! ;) As for employment opportunities with longer trading. 10 years ago in Texas I saw large scale automated checkouts at the 24hour shop till you drop - Walmart. The jumbo small business slayer! Big W is now full of them and who ever else. There are many less check out staff on any given days. Aint progress grand!!!???!!! Friday night, Saturday night, all day Sunday - Shop it, rack it up and debt it if ya aint got the cash, or get out and have fun - hard choice maybe, but not for me ;) haha Enjoy guys!
Well, well seems some of us were right.
Myer has announced it si going back to the old trading hours as "people don't want to shop after work on weeknights"
Perth doesn't need it and most people didn't want it (oh hang on, wasn't that the referendum result anyway?)
Elsewhere..... I have been supplying retailers with work wear, footwear and casual wear for the past 8 years. More than a few have closed their doors and most want products now on consignment as they cant carry the expense of purchase and goods sitting on the shop floor. None have increased staffing levels, with many - the opposite. I am now supplying mining construction and Agriculture direct and its no walk in the park and no easy money and I cant take on staff or expand!
Mining as an industry and their support businesses has had the jobs, is fairly buoyant and the states early savior. We would be stuffed without it! However Mining is spending much less and very cautious and as of 2009 is now investing much more in development and expansion offshore and its increasing - West Africa, Indonesia and New Guinea. Do I know of West Aussies out of work - Yes, there are more than a few and I know more than a few of them - unfortunately. Ohhh, And don't believe all the stats the govt has for us. A mate of mine is one of the many state statisticians at the Bureau of Statistics.... Some are true and there is also much selective editing and very careful information releases are the name of the day. And at times - they are straight lies or is it called untruths? Fancy that from a poly or the media! haha. If you knew how many ignored retractions are issued to politicians each week over their quoted stats you would be surprised! Well, I was... If ya love your 24 hour shopping - go for it! If you luv being elsewhere - enjoy the hell out of it. Thats where I am at ;)
